Hazard-Productions

Water Graphics

Posted by Hazard-Productions May. 21, 2008 @ 9:20 PM EDT

Work on SOL is progressing slowly, but the game is shaping up very well! Right now I'm trying to work out how water will look. I know it's pretty small, but the picture I've included shows on the left a new technique for water I'm trying out versus how I've done it so far. I'm having a hard time getting it to look right though, hopefully some people have some suggestions?

My friend tom is writing music for the game, which is sounding absolutely fantastic. You can check out some of the stuff he's written on his myspace page. The first two on his player are going to be in the game, and the last one I think he's going to rework for a different area than originally intended.

Is that what your flash looks like? It looks really great.

Looks amazing!
Really look forward to it, just like the first.

I think your new technique looks better. Having transparent water adds some depth to it, and makes it more realistic.

It is nice.

Very nice.

....shiny =)

Use photoshop in combination with flash and you can create some pretty sweet water effects.. among other things.

May. 22, 2008 | 8:51 PM Hazard-Productions responds:

I thought about doing that, but that sounds really time consuming, and water effects aren't something I want to spend a huge amount of time on in development.

photoshop water always looks terrible. always. especially when animated in flash.

your water looks great. (on the left side of the pic vs the right)

all it needs is some light light transparent ripples coming from the shore and off the rock. not so bright to draw attention to themselves, but enough to where its visible.

I like ur new water graphic. I can see it fading off into the distance to fit with the camera angle while the older one looks more overhead. It DOES look a little shallow, though...

It definitely looks like water.
Making water look like water in Flash can be quite difficult. You did a really nice job with the bridge reflection.

I guess you could try to make it look more like it's 'flowing,' like a few ripple-marks or something.

I dunno how if this would work, but you could make a layer underneath the ground for the water, and just tween it down or something. But then it would skip when it reached the end of the tween. It looks great, though!

Maybe Adam Phillips can teach you about water effects. He's the person to ask.

May. 22, 2008 | 8:47 PM Hazard-Productions responds:

I actually came up with this after looking at a file of his somebody put up in a V-Cam tutorial.

I recommend doing the water on the left side but with a lighter shadows and less shadows around the edges. I hope this helps!

I suggest you take a good strong look at your life and make some changes. God is NOT happy about such foul immorality. Life is a test and these guys are failing miserably. Judgement day is not far off so pull your head out if it is stuck in the wrong place.

May. 22, 2008 | 8:47 PM Hazard-Productions responds:

...right.

May. 22, 2008 | 6:32 PM eyerecon says:

um...... wat about a frame by frame reflecteve movement... that COULD look really well if done right.

May. 22, 2008 | 8:49 PM Hazard-Productions responds:

yeah, in the swf file it's animated, that's just a jpeg. I'm not the greatest at fbf, but hopefully it turns out ok.

Jul. 15, 2008 | 11:13 PM Hazard-Productions responds:

lol, the opaque blue liquid... I'm not so sure I want to do that again...

May. 24, 2008 | 7:07 AM 301heng says:

WOW! It is cool but one thing is important, you need different graphics for different places! If they are the same, it will look ermm.............the same! no i mean boring. Pls do not make it totally blue since river waters are usually blue with a little green and for sea water, make sure you make them blink white light usually.;)
Hope you complete it soon!
